Bozukkale and Serçe Harbour Sailing Guide
Discover the ancient ramparts of Loryma at Bozukkale and the fjord-like natural haven of Serçe Harbour, just a short sail from Netsel Marmaris Marina.
Historic Havens on the Edge of the Aegean
Guarding the entrance to the Rhodes Channel at the southern tip of the Bozburun Peninsula, Bozukkale and Serçe Harbour are two of the most celebrated anchorages along the Turkish coast. Steep limestone cliffs drop into crystal-clear waters, creating a dramatic, unspoiled maritime landscape. For millennia, these natural harbors have protected naval fleets and trading vessels traversing the boundary between the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.
Ancient Fortresses and Shore Exploration
The dominant landmark at Bozukkale is the ancient Citadel of Loryma, perched directly above the harbor mouth. Scrambling ashore to wander along the remarkably preserved fourth-century BC walls rewards you with sweeping views across the strait towards Rhodes. Next door, Serçe Harbour gained international fame in maritime archaeology as the resting place of an 11th-century Byzantine glass wreck, now exhibited in Bodrum. The quiet shores offer peaceful trails through aromatic scrubland and olive groves.
Anchorages and Shelter
Both bays offer outstanding protection against the prevailing summer winds:
- Bozukkale: Wide and well-sheltered, featuring several rustic restaurant piers equipped with lazy lines, as well as ample room for anchoring on good holding ground.
- Serçe Limani: Entered through a narrow opening that leads into a deep, fjord-like enclosed basin with completely calm water, mooring buoys, and anchoring room.
- Çiftlik Bay: A wide nearby bay with a sandy beach and restaurant jetties, perfect for an early swim stop on your way.
